Peles Castle


PeleŞ Castle is located in the Carpathian Mountains in Sinaia, Romania.  The architecture is of the Neo-Renaissance and Gothic Revival design.  Romania gained independence from the Ottoman Empire and was recognized in 1878 by the Treaty of Berlin.  The principality was elevated to a kingdom in 1881 with Carol I becoming King of the Romanians.  The castle was built between 1873 and 1914.  King Carol I had fell in love with the mountain scenery and purchased the property in 1872.  There were several buildings being constructed on the property at the same time as the castle, these buildings included the guards’ chambers, the hunting lodge, the royal stables, and a power plant.  PeleŞ Castle boasts 160 rooms and seven ornate terraces.  Throughout the castles history, royalty, as well as other important personalities, have stayed at PeleŞ.  The castle is open for guided touring.
